Originally released in 1993, Vs. saw Pearl Jam follow their landmark debut Ten with a rawer, heavier and more uncompromising sound. Recorded at a time when the band were grappling with sudden fame and intense media attention, the album strips back some of the polish of its predecessor in favour of harder guitars, dynamic arrangements and Eddie Vedder's increasingly introspective songwriting. It became a defining release of the grunge era and set a new record for first-week US album sales at the time.
